Driver killed as truck falls into river

A truck driver was killed when his vehicle fell into the Old Brammaputra river by breaking the railing of a pontoon bridge at Jamalpur-Sherpur ferryghat yesterday.

The driver was identified as Lebu Mia, 37, son of Kaikobad of village Fultala in Kalihati upazila of Tangail district.

Local people said a Sherpur-bound sand-laden truck from Jamalpur fell into the river when the driver was trying to board the ferry at noon.

Two helpers of the truck, however, managed to save their lives, but the driver was trapped inside the truck.

Later, the fire brigade personnel recovered the driver's body.
