Tribute
In remembrance of Abdul Latif


Bangladesh Loko Sangeet Porishad organised a commemorative meeting for language activist and venerable musician Abdul Latif at the auditorium of Kachi Kanchar Ashore on May 19.

Eminent cultural personalities Shudhin Das, Mustafa Zaman Abbasi, Asadul Haque, Nashid Kamal, Indra Mohan Rajbongshi, Ashraf Siddiqui and others paid their tribute to the dedicated patriotic singer Latif.

After the welcome speech of Nasreen Ferdous, the general secretary of the organisation, Shamsul Arefin Arif recounted some of his cherished memories about his father Latif. Arif urged Bangladeshis to cooperate in the preservation of Latif's songs by publishing books and producing records.

Veteran cultural personality Mustafa Zaman Abbasi briefly presented the immense contribution of the artiste to the music of Bangladesh. Abbasi said, "Abdul Latif dedicated his entire life to uphold the Bangla culture to the people of the world. The spirit of his songs is incomparable. The boldness and the urge for independence have been portrayed in his songs vividly which inspired the whole nation to fight for their rights. The people of Bangladesh must pay their due respect to this incomparable musician."

Recalling some childhood memories about the artiste, popular Nazrul singer Nashid Kamal said, "Abdul Latif had the unique endowment to rapidly write appropriate songs on any occasion."

Veteran Nazrul exponent Sudhin Das shared some amusing and touching memories of Latif. He went on to add that "Despite his tremendous contribution to composing incomparable music, Latif never craved for publicity."

In the second session of the programme, the artistes of Bangladesh Loko Sangeet Porishad rendered some of the songs written and composed by Abdul Latif including Porer jaga porer jomi, Dol dol duluni, Shona shona shona and Ora amar mukher katha. Artistes also presented several dance pieces with Latif's songs.
