WB wants immunity to cover up misdeeds
Speakers tell rally

Speakers at a rally yesterday called for launching mass movement against the government's move to give blanket immunity to World Bank (WB).

They said except an impoverished African nation Ghana, no country in the world has given immunity to the bank.

Bangladesh Centre for Rights and Development organised the rally at Swaperjita Swadhinata Chattar on the Dhaka University campus with its President Rafiq Zaman in the chair.

The speakers said the WB wants immunity only to cover up its misdeeds and anti-people activities.

It is our duty to unmask the actual character of the WB, they added.

The speakers said the WB, in collusion with the bureaucrats and ruling classes,

is indulging corruption in the country.

Prof Anu Mohammad, a noted economist, said the WB has done nothing for the development of this country.

Rather, its policy has brought debacles in all sectors including agriculture, industry and commerce, he added.

Prof M M Akash, another economist, stressed the need for creating mass awareness about the huge wastage of money caused by the wrong policies of the bank.

He said the WB, which is fully dominated by the USA, is serving the interests of multi-national companies.
