Refusal to Pay Toll
Scrap trader, his wife shot in city

Local criminals shot a scrap trader and his wife in their house in the city's Pallabi area early yesterday for his refusal to pay toll to them.

Witnesses said a gang of four led by listed criminal Chora Monir stormed the rented house of Billal Hossain, 34, at Section 7, Road No-8 at about 6:30am and fired on Billal in his sleep.

Billal's wife Rani Begum, 25, was shot as she rushed to the bedroom to save her husband.

"As I cried for help and suffered a bullet, the criminals fled the house," Rani told journalists at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH).

Hospital sources said Billal received four bullets in his abdomen, back and a leg while Rani was shot in her left leg.

Rani said Monir used to call her husband over his cellphone for the last one month and demanded Tk 5,000 per month in toll. He also warned of dire consequences if they fail to pay the toll.

The Duty Officer of Pallabi Police Station said they were on a hunt to arrest Monir and his accomplices.
