Couple on 2-day remand

A couple, who were arrested for beating their eight-year-old domestic help to death at Mirpur in the city on Saturday, was remanded yesterday.The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka placed Selina Akhtar Ruma and her husband Ataur Rahman on a two-day remand when Mirpur police produced them before the court with a five-day remand petition. The lawyer of the couple opposed the petition and sought bail. Metropolitan Magistrate Qamrun Nahar rejected the bail prayer and granted a two-day remand. Meanwhile, doctors at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have carried out the autopsy on Rupali's body. Morgue sources said there were several blood clotting in her head which led to her death. Rupali's uncle Mahbub Alam received the body at 2:30pm on completion of the autopsy. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has demanded exemplary punishment to the couple. The organisation will bring out a procession at Paikpara this afternoon to protest the murder.
