Q & A
"My fans never cease to amaze me" -- Shakila
Shakila Zafar comes under the Pisces sign but she shot to fame in the '80s with the song "Tula Rashir Meye Aar Mithun Rashir Cheley" (A girl who's a Libra and a boy who's a Gemini). She prefers subtle colours like white and powder pink. She has been treading the path of music for a quarter of a century. Here's a glimpse of Shakila at her candid best. So how did it all begin? One of my uncles was a music buff. As a child, whenever we made a visit to Dhaka from Chittagong, I would always play with the harmonium. Noticing my interest in music, after I had matriculated, he introduced Ustaad Yasin Khan to my parents and that is how my musical journey began. Do you have a nickname? I am known as Khuku to my kith and kin. When was the last time you felt insignificant? I can't point out a particular incident. But whenever music is not well appreciated, it makes me disappointed and dispirited. What's the best compliment you have received so far? People are very generous about complimenting my outlook towards life. I often overhear people saying that I am full of life, fun and frolic. But the best compliment that I received was during my recent performance in London. To my utter surprise, at the concert the listeners asked me to present a few numbers without any musical support. They just wanted to listen to the intricate details of my voice. I rendered a few of my favourite songs, which included Nazrul's Peye keno nahi pai and another classical number. This was a rather rare experience for me. You never get tired shopping for... First of, I enjoy doing my own groceries. That way I can have my pick of fresh vegetables and food. I love shopping for upholstery and other interior furnishings. Last but not the least, sarees are my all time favourites. You never leave home without... My purse. I carry all my essentials in it. Three "must haves" in love... It's difficult to point out just three, but I have to go with loyalty, sincerity and devotion. What won't you joke about? I hate mocking physical disabilities. Sometimes we notice people picking on others regarding their physical features; that is unacceptable. A day is perfect when... When I am content with my rewaz, after listening to a moving song, if the recording of a song is satisfactory, if I can complete all my chores for the day and of course when I hear any good news of my son. Any hilarious incident to share? My fans never cease to amaze me. During one of my stage performances when my fans tried to get into the green room. The volunteers shoved them all out. However, one managed to remain in the room in the middle of scuffling. He was trying to take a picture of me but due to the pushing and shoving, he accidentally focused the camera on his face. So I guess now he has a huge shot of his nose!! Any regrets on becoming a singer? Certainly not. I am very much content. As a young girl, my father would always advise me to be modest. From then on I have always nurtured the passion to learn more and to listen to good music. Maybe for this reason I am ever indebted to God for all that he has given me.
