50,000 marooned in Moulvibazar flashfloods


At least 50 thousand people of Kamalganj and Kulaura upazilas in the district have been marooned as 80 villages under 12 unions of the two upazilas have been inundated by flood water due to excessive rainfall and onrush of water from Indian hills.

The main rivers including the Manu and the Dhalai are flowing above the danger level and water of all the rivers in the district is increasing.

Flood affected areas of Kamalganj upazila are Madhabpur, Adampur, Kamalganj, Patanushar, Alinagar, Islampur, Munshibazar unions and a part of Kamalganj municipality.

Major haats and bazars of this upazila including Bhanugachh-bazar, Kamalganjbazar, Adampurbazar went under floodwater.

Floodwater has washed away about 100 feet area of Kamalganj-Adampur road near Alipur. Road communications of Kamalganj upazila headquarters with Srimangal, Bhanugachh, Adampur and Patrokhola have been disrupted.

The old Dhalai Bridge in Kamalganj has become vulnerable.

Meanwhile, the Manu river is also flowing over the danger mark near Chandnighat bridge and Manu railway bridge.

People of the area including Hajipur and Mahtabpur under Kulaura upazila and Adinabad area of Tengra union under Rajnagar upazila are working to protect the Manu river flood protection embankment which is now under threat at different points due to rise of river water.

Water of the Manu river is entering villages near Joypasha and Laskarpur of Kulaura upazila.
