Spectrum Factory Collapse
More compensation demanded

Bangladesh Garment Workers Unity Council yesterday observed a token hunger strike in the city demanding more compensation for the victims of Spectrum Sweater Factory Building collapse at Savar on April 11 that killed 80 workers.

The council observed the two-hour strike at Muktangon starting at 10am.

Addressing a rally after the hunger strike, council President Advocate Delwar Hussein said, "Only 20 victims received a nominal compensation. But we want Tk 5 lakh as compensation for each of the victims killed, and Tk 2 lakh for each injured workers."

"We want exemplary punishment to factory owners. If the authorities do not meet our demand, we will go for strike, " said Selim Reza, additional secretary general of the council.

The speakers apprehended that many other garment factory buildings could meet the fate of Spectrum Sweater Factory as their conditions are also very dilapidated.

Later, a procession was brought out from Muktangon that paraded different city streets.

Leaders of Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik Jote also demanded stern punishment to the owners of the collapsed Spectrum Sweater Factory and immediate compensation for the victims' families.

Addressing a rally at Muktangon, jote leaders alleged that some influential persons of the government are trying to save the owners of the factory.

Jote Chairman Shirin Akhtar said both the government and the factory owners should ensure the safety of the workers.

She demanded of the government to provide employment to five thousand workers who have lost their jobs due to Spectrum tragedy.

Another jote leader Siddiqur Rahman urged the government and the owners to pay Tk 7 lakh to the families of those killed, and Tk 3 lakh to the families of the injured workers.

Jote leaders Saiful Islam, Umme Ahsan Jhalmal, Mahbubur Rahman, and Sharifuzzaman Jhantu were present on the occasion.

Earlier, the jote formed a human chain to press home their demands.
