Matchmakers unite against dowry

Over a hundred matchmakers at a meeting yesterday announced that they will refrain from matchmaking efforts which involve dowry.

The Narayanganj district administration organised the unique meeting to raise awareness about dowry and child marriage, with Deputy Commissioner SM Harunar Rashid in the chair.

Matchmakers from different areas of the district joined the meeting. They said they can play a strong role in checking the dowry practice and child marriage if their licence and fees are ensured.

They said there are some people who do not want to pay fees to the matchmakers if they do not get dowry. Actions should be taken against those who do not want to marry without dowry, they added.

The matchmakers also narrated their sufferings and deprivation at the meeting.

Deputy Commissioner SM Harunar Rashid said the meeting has been arranged to raise awareness among the matchmakers who can play an important role in eliminating dowry and child marriage.
