Moudud contradicts Saber

Law Minister Moudud Ahmed yesterday reasserted that Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was not appointed through consultation during the Awami League rule, as contentions over the new CEC appointment continued.

Responding to opposition leader's political secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury's statement on the appointment of CEC, he said the fact remains that there had not been any consultation between the government and the opposition during their times.

Saber said that former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had written two letters to the then opposition leader, Khaleda Zia, in 2000 and sought her suggestions on the appointment of the CEC before MA Syed was appointed.

"Saber's statement is correct regarding sending letter and my statement is also correct that CEC was not appointed through consultation." Moudud told reporters at his office.

He said, "Culture of resolving important national issues through consultation between two the major political parties has not developed in the country."

"It will have been better for all had there been such culture developed here," the Law Minister said, adding, " I have never spoken about sending letters--what I said that there had not been any consultation."
