Haji Selim, nine others chargesheeted in 2 criminal cases

A Dhaka court yesterday accepted the charge sheets of two criminal cases against former Awami League (AL) lawmaker Haji Mohammad Selim and nine others.

Ramna Police submitted the charge sheets to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court against the accused on Wednesday.

After scrutinising the case dockets and other documents, Metropolitan Magistrate Mamun Al Rashid issued the order and directed the authorities concerned to transfer the case filed in connection with the bomb explosion to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court, Dhaka for its disposal.

Other accused are Kala Malek alias Abdul Malek, Samrat Chowdhury, Jiku Babul alias Babul, Ali Ashraf, Rezaul Karim, Moslem, Badsha Miah, Malek Munshi and Mofijul Islam alias Dud Miah.

Of them, Haji Selim and seven others are now on bail while Jiku Babul is still at large. Dud Miah died on May 3 in "cross-fire".

In the first case, Mohammad Shahadad Hossain Shahid, office secretary of BNP's Ramna thana unit, alleged that at about 11:20am on January 26, 1999 a group of AL leaders led by Haji Selim attacked senior BNP leaders, including the complainant with firearms, short gun, bomb and hockey sticks in front of the UBL police box near Gulistan when they (BNP) were in a procession to make the hartal a success. The attack left the complainant and some others seriously injured.

Later, two cases were filed with Raman Poliuce Station accusing Haji Selim and 21 others after three years and eight months. One was filed under the Explosive Substances Act and the other for making attempted murder.
