Ban on plying of engine boats in Foy's Lake

The railway authorities have prohibited plying of all kinds of engine boats in the Foy's Lake, better known as a recreation centre.

The ban has been imposed as the lake water has got contaminated.

Railway sources said, over one hundred people have been attacked with water borne diseases after using the water of the lake.

About 50,000 people, including Chittagong Railway (East) officials and employees, are dependant on the water of Foy's Lake.

Concord International has been constructing recreation centre since last year at the Foy's Lake owned by the railway, and its adjacent areas.

As per the deal between Railway and Concord all modes of engine-run boats have been made off-limit to the Lake.

Railway Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad and Sramik Karmachari Oikya Parishad (Skop) staged a demonstration at the Lake areas and submitted a memorandum to railway general manager Sultan Ahmed against the backdrop of their relatives' falling sick.

After that the railway authorities issued a notice to Concord on Wednesday imposing a ban on plying of all modes of engine-run boats.

The railway authorities have formed a four-member committee to investigate the cause of the contamination of the lake water.

The committee members are AGM Bazlur Rahman, senior welfare officer Mahbubur Rahman, divisional engineer-2 Rafiquzzaman and divisional medical officer Dr GP Saha.
