Jalil protests attack on Laxmipur activists
UNB, Dhaka
Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil yesterday protested the "attack on his party workers by the armed cadres of BNP-Jamaat" during a conference of Bhabaniganj union AL in Laxmipur district. In a statement, he said no autocratic government in the past could stay in power through arrest, repression, false case and attack, and "this government will also not succeed in doing so." Jalil claimed that some 50 AL workers were injured in the attack at Charbhuta village on Tuesday, alleging that the attackers also rampaged through the conference venue and looted valuables. Local sources, however, said that at least 41 people were injured in a clash between BNP and Awami League workers at Charbhuta village in Sadar upazila on Tuesday night. He demanded immediate arrest of and punishment to "the armed terrorists of the ruling BNP-Jamaat, who were responsible for the incident," and asked the alliance government to refrain from such activities in future.
