Hawkers demand allocation in budget

Leaders of Bangladesh Federation of Rural & Urban Poor (BFRUP) yesterday urged the government to allocate funds in the upcoming budget for rehabilitation of the hawkers and formulate a national policy in this regard.

Addressing a rally at city's Muktangon to mark the international Hawkers Day, BFRUP leaders also demanded that the government not evict city hawkers without proper rehabilitation.

Demanding more hawkers' market in the city, MA Zaman, president of the organisation, said hawkers don't want to occupy city streets to run their businesses causing troubles to the pedestrians.

They also alleged they have to pay regular tolls to police for running business on the streets.

They said about three lakh hawkers around the country, who are self-employed, are contributing to the national economy significantly although there is no support from the government part.
