10 die from heat stroke
Hundreds suffer from dehydration, diarrhoea


Heat stroke caused by the extreme heat wave persisting over the country for the last few days killed at least 10 people, including three women, in Sirajganj, Gaibandha and Mymensingh, and sent hundreds seeking treatment for dehydration and diarrhoea at hospitals and clinics in Dhaka.

According to the meteorological office, temperature in Dhaka reached 36.6 degrees Celsius yesterday while the highest temperature was recorded in Chuadanga at 43 degrees Celsius.

In Sirajganj, boiler workers Maleka, 25, of Khokshabari village, and Suraiya, 20, of Banditashgati village, fell seriously ill while at work yesterday. They were rushed to sadar hospital, where they died at noon.

In Gaibandha, day-labourers Mofizal, 78, and Khaibor, 70, of Bhabanpara village in Sadar upazila fainted and died at sadar hospital yesterday.

In Mymensingh, where the temperature sore up to 34 degrees Celsius, rickshaw-puller Ibrahim, 30, of Shurerpur in Fulbaria upazila, suddenly collapsed and died instantly at the railway station square at about 3:30pm yesterday.

Earlier, Anwar Hossain, 65, of Ullapara upazila, Sobhan, 70, of Solanga upazila, and a woman aged about 70 of Tarash upazila, admitted in hospital after they fell sick, died Wednesday night in Sirajganj.

Babul Das, 57, and Gafur, 87, of Companypara village in Sadar upazila died on Wednesday in Gaibandha, where seventeen people, mostly old men and children, were admitted to hospital.

Meanwhile, many public and private hospitals in the capital were found crowded with patients suffering from dehydration and diarrhoea. Admissions of patients at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Dhaka Shishu Hospital were highest during the day yesterday.

The nation-wide diarrhoea patients' tally in the last one week stood at 15,993, including admission of 1,919 people yesterday alone, with the death of six people.

In the wake of the heat wave, the government deployed 47 medical teams and five temporary medical camps for the benefit of the patients in most of the remotest areas of the country.
