Hartal called in Khulna over budget fund

The Greater Khulna Development Action Coordination Committee (GKDACC) has called for a dawn-to-dusk hartal in Khulna Metropolitan City and Phultala upazila of Khulna district on June 18.

The hartal call was given yesterday at a press conference at the Khulna Press Club in protest against non-allocation of funds in the proposed national budget for the fiscal 2005-06 for the development of Khulna region.

Addressing the press conference, the GKDACC Secretary General Shaikh Ashfaquzzaman has threatened a greater movement if the demand for allocation of funds for implementing the development projects is not ensured in the budget.

The GKDACC has been agitating for the last three years demanding infrastructural development of Mongla Port, completion of construction work of Khuna Airport and Abu Nasser Specialised Hospital, installation of a 210-mw power plant, gas supply through a pipeline, a deep sea port at

Akram point and the reopening of all jute mills, Khulna Harboard mill, and Khulna Newsprint Mill.
