NBR issues SRO on Tk 1,200 tax on SIM card

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) yesterday circulated a statutory regulatory order (SRO) on the budgetary proposal for a Tk 1,200 tax on each SIM card.

The SRO, issued on June 9, the day Finance Minister M Saifur Rahman placed the budget for the 2005-06 fiscal year, has been sent to different cellphone operators.

NBR sources said they made the move, before passage of the budget on June 30, in the wake of customers' trouble in buying SIM card at reasonable prices.

Following Thursday's budget announcement, customers rushed to retailers to buy SIM (subscriber identy module) cards but most dealers stopped selling it. Some of them are charging higher prices for SIM card.
