Liton treble for 5-star Brothers

Rezaul Karim Liton celebrated a place in the Brothers Union starting line-up for the first time in the Premier Bank Premier Football League with a hattrick to help the defending champions thrash Dhaka Wanderers 5-0 yesterday. The Oranges led the first half 1-0 at the Bangabandhu National Stadium but the floodgates were opened after the break with Victor Edwards and Parvez Babu adding one goal apiece. It was Brothers' fourth consecutive win which kept atop with 12 points while Wanderers remain stuck on one point following their third defeat. Midfielder Liton, who had scored two goals in the previous three matches coming in as substitute, was chosen ahead of Monwar and showed superb ball control and distribution. But Brothers, despite dominating the whole show, failed to utilise a series of chances. Khokon failed to connect a low cross by Russian striker Edward in front of an open net while rival goalkeeper Sohel twice denied efforts from Edward and rightback Siraji. Edward got the best chance in the 37th minute but the Russian rattled the crossbar with a left-foot volley after meeting a centre by Abul. Liton finally separated the two sides three minutes later when he picked an opposition clearance at the left side of the penalty box and chipped a left-footer into the roof of the net from a difficult angle. In an embarrassingly one-sided second half, Liton doubled the lead on the hour. Unmarked outside the Wanderers box, Liton spectacularly swung a left-footer into the right hand post of Sohel who had no chance to react. The former national footballer completed the second hattrick of the ongoing league when he coolly converted a penalty, this time with his right foot, seven minutes later. The spot-kick was awarded when Edward, who raced into the box from the left with a through from captain Sujan, was tripped from behind by Sohel after going round the keeper. Liton now leads the scorers' list with five goals, just ahead of Russel Krira Chakra striker Yusuf Ali who notched the first treble during his four-goal campaign in their 10-0 drubbing of Youngmen's Club Fakirerpool. Brothers custodian Tareq was not required to make a single save but Wanderers, who held Russel to a 1-1 draw in the previous round, could not stop the barrage of goals despite replacing Sohel with Nadim under the bar. Edward, who made it 4-0 in the 82nd minute with a clinical finish following a through from Pranotosh, set up Parvez Babu down the left flank to seal the victory five minutes from time. Overlapping fullback Parvez also had to work hard for his second league goal, dribbling past two defenders before pushing the ball home from an acute angle. Brothers made another change in their line-up, giving centre-back Shuvra a break for injured Masud Rana. Yellow cards: Pranotosh (Brothers) and Sohel, Yakub (Wanderers). TEAMS BROTHERS UNION: Tareq, Sujan, Jewel, Shuvra, Siraji, Abul (Rikto), Hicham (Pranotosh), Liton, Parvez, Edward and Khokon (Emily).
