Barca won't spend big

Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard said on Saturday that the Spanish champions were not planning to make any major signings before next season.

The Catalans ended a six-year wait for their 17th Spanish title last month but their Champions League challenge was halted at the quarterfinal stage by Chelsea.

Barcelona have won Europe's premier competition just once, in 1992, but Rijkaard is not planning to make major changes to his squad.

"It's a complicated question," the Dutchman told reporters in Tokyo after his team arrived in Japan for a close-season tour. "It's true we lost in the quarterfinals of the Champions League.

"But that was a big experience for the players and a big lesson. They can learn from it and improve. It doesn't mean we need to buy new players."

Barcelona have reinforced their squad by signing Dutch international Mark van Bommel from PSV Eindhoven and Spanish winger Santi Ezquerro from Athletic Bilbao.

But the club's president Joan Laporta this week denied interest in signing Arsenal striker Thierry Henry in exchange for Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o.

"There will always be talk about signing this player or that player," Rijkaard said.

"But with the experience they gained against Chelsea, the players will know how to play those big games more effectively."

Barcelona take on Japanese champions Yokohama F-Marinos on Sunday and Urawa Reds on Wednesday.

Club captain Carles Puyol, along with Italian midfielder Demetrio Albertini, are among those missing from the trip through injury.

Ronaldinho, Eto'o, Juliano Belletti and Rafael Marquez are unavailable because of international duty.

Barcelona's Swedish striker Henrik Larsson, however, is relishing the opportunity to work on his match fitness after missing most of last season following knee surgery.

"It's a good chance for me to play a bit more after the injury," he said. "For me it's perfect."
