Sister sues cops for 'murdering' 2 brothers

A woman yesterday filed a case with the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court (CMM) against seven policemen and their informer accusing of torturing her two younger brothers to death for failing to pay a bribe of Tk 1 lakh.

Fatema Begum of West Mekot Road under Khulna Police Station (PS) accused Sub-inspectors (SI) Anisur Rahman, Ranjit Kumar Das and Shah Alam, assistant SIs Habibur Rahman and Shamim-ar-Rashid, constables Mohammad Forkan and Tayeb Ali of the Khulna PS and their informant Akramuz-zaman.

In the petition she said her brothers Munna (25) and Amir (22) were picked up by the accused on August 31 last year. The police demanded Tk 1 lakh from her brothers as bribe for letting them off from the Khulna PS custody.

Fatema Begum further mentioned that the accused tortured her brothers mercilessly for refusing to pay the amount and threatened to kill them in crossfire.

Her brothers fell sick and later succumbed to their injuries in the prison cell of the Khulna Medical College Hospital at 11:45pm on August 31 last year, she said.

SI Ranjit Kumar Das filed a case with the Khulna PS on September 1 naming some unidentified men for the "murders" of the two. In the FIR (first information report), he stated that Munna and Amir were "lynched" by angry mob. SI Shah Alam of Khulna was made the investigation officer of the case.

Fatema's petition further said she was not allowed to lodge any FIR with the Khulna PS in connection with the murder of her brothers. The accused rather threatened to kill her for making further attempts to go to the court or higher authorities of the Khulna Metropolitan Police, she said.

SIs Anisur Rahman and Shah Alam are still serving at the Khulna PS while SI Ranjit Kumar Das is working at the CMM court.
