Narsingdi By-polls
HC rejects stay plea

The High Court (HC) yesterday rejected a writ petition, which sought a stay on holding the June 22 parliamentary by-election to Narsingdi-1.

The HC bench of Justices Shah Abu Nayeem Mominur Rahman and Mainul Islam Chowdhury passed the order after Ferdous-ur Rahman, whose nomination paper for the by-election was rejected, filed the petition the same day.

An expatriate in Japan, Ferdous submitted his nomination paper to the returning officer (RO) on May 28. But the RO's office identified him as a loan defaulter and cancelled the nomination paper the following day.

He lodged an appeal with the RO against the cancellation. But that too was rejected. Then he had appealed to the Election Commission and the matter is now pending.

The petitioner filed the writ petition seeking a stay on holding the by-election until the EC disposes of his appeal.

Another High Court bench had rejected another writ petition filed by Belal Hossain, an aspirant to the same parliamentary seat. The petition challenged the validity of cancellation of Hossain's nomination paper.
