GMO issue

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), the contribution of biotechnology, nowadays is a principal matter of concern for the bio-scientists all over the world. In recent days, our scientists are also thinking deeply on this, looking for the induction of golden rice, which is said to be rich in vitamin-A. The hand-out of our respected teacher Md. Shahjahan Ali published in The Daily Star on May 6, 2005 brought my attention to that matter. He cited the dangerous consequences we may face in near future with the induction of a new gene from a different plant species. According to him, deformity of rice varieties, crisis in the production of other cereal crops, peculiar characteristics development in the living beings and even extinction of animals may take place. The effect of gene on humans or plants might be observed within a short period or after a long time.

So, my appeal to our government is: make the people aware of the latest developments in agriculture science.
