Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) yesterday transferred 10 more sergeants for alleged links with extortion, mugging, drug peddling and other criminal activities.A fresh accusation was brought yesterday against a traffic sergeant of forcing a businessman to bribe him Tk 2,500. With yesterday's transfers, 30 sergeants have been sent out of the capital for their alleged involvement in criminal activities since the DMP launched the clean-up drive on Monday. DMP Commissioner SM Mizanur Rahman confirmed the transfers, noting, "They had very bad records." The drive will continue, he said. The DMP authorities are investigating into the affairs of those police officials, who have not been performing up to the mark, said a DMP high official. The transfers are token punishments, he added. FRESH ACCUSATION OF BRIBERY According to the new allegation, Sergeant Abul Hossain stopped Dulal, owner of Electronic Appliances at Russell Square in the city, at about 5:30pm yesterday and wanted to see the papers of his car, sources said. When the sergeant found a paper was missing, he asked Dulal to go to the police station with him or give Tk 5,000 in bribe. The sergeant finally allowed him to go after Dulal handed out Tk 2,500 to him. Dulal later informed the matter to top police officials. DMP Traffic Deputy Commissioner (South) Ansar Uddin Khan Pathan said he has received such an allegation and assigned Additional Deputy Commissioner (Traffic-South) to look into the complaint. Meanwhile, the five-member committee formed Monday to monitor the probe into the mugging of a businessman by Sergeant Julfikar in the city on June 28 has started working yesterday. Julfikar was arrested on June 29, eight hours after he robbed a businessman of Tk 14.47 lakh at Bijoynagar, but the money has not been recovered yet. The committee will not submit any written report, DMP Commissioner Rahman told The Daily Star, adding, "They will just watch the progress of the investigation."
