Best cleared

Football legend George Best has been cleared of allegations he indecently assaulted a girl and hit a woman.

The 59-year-old former Manchester United and Northern Ireland star spent more than nine hours at a police station in Surrey, southeast England last month where he was questioned over the claims.

He was released on police bail and had been due to return to the station Wednesday but officers said they had dropped the investigation.

"Following a full investigation by Surrey Police, and after consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, there will be no further action taken," a police spokeswoman said.

Last month a girl under 13 alleged she had been indecently assaulted by Best.

Best was also questioned last month about an incident when he allegedly punched a 34-year-old woman outside the home of his ex-lover, Gina Devivo, in Ewell, Surrey.

Best had received a facial injury the previous week during an encounter with his then lover Ros Hollidge, who was cautioned by police over the incident.

Best, who had a liver transplant after years of alcohol abuse, was reported to be staying with his ex-wife Alex at their old marital home.

He is reckoned to be one of the most naturally gifted footballers ever to play the sport, but his career fizzled out while he was still in his 20s as a pop star lifestyle took its toll.

By the time Best finally finished playing he was an alcoholic, and has reportedly resumed drinking even after being given a life-saving liver transplant in 2002.
