Academic activities resumed at Dhaka University (DU) yesterday after a month-long summer vacation and a four-day student strike enforced by the seven student organisations led by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), the student wing of the Awami League. The student organisations enforced an indefinite strike on July 1, the day the university reopened after the vacation. They called off the strike on Monday after the university authorities assured them of meeting their five-point demand. Meanwhile, the authorities postponed all examinations scheduled for up to July 11 due to unavoidable reasons. Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of the ruling BNP, staged a showdown on the campus yesterday with a vow to resist all 'evil elements' in order to maintain congenial atmosphere at the university. Speaking at a rally, JCD General Secretary Shafiul Bari Babu urged the students to remain alert to resist any illogical strike at the DU for the greater interest of the students. Presided over by DU JCD President Hasan Mamun, the rally was also addressed by JCD Acting President Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Mostafa Khan Safori, Saiful Islam Firoz, Atiqur Rahman, Golam Hafiz Nahin, Mamunur Rashid Mamun and Akramul Hasan.
