Campus situation
Nurul Haque Dept of Law, DU
The situation in Dhaka University has become unstable again in the aftermath of the death of Shamme Akter Happy in a road accident. As a consequence of this all the examinations scheduled to be held during the period of summer vacation have been postponed. Though the relatives of Shammi Akter urged not to make her death a political issue, yet the opposition backed student wings left no stone unturned to give this accident a political colour. They blamed the police for attacking them and at the same time demanded the resignation of the Vice Chancellor. But if we analyse that day's situation we will find enough reason behind police action. On that day some students, influenced by some political organisations, tried to move to the Shahbag intersection in a procession. Their motive was obviously malicious and it was to block the road and spread terror by breaking vehicles. If they had the intention to organise their agitation peacefully they could easily do that within the Dhaka University campus and it would be more logical. But without doing that they tried to create panic and fear. Therefore, the police went into action to protect the life and property of the common people, which they are legally bound to do. It would be pertinent to mention that the students should not think that they would be allowed to do everything simply because they study in Dhaka University. However, I do agree that the police should have handled the matter more gently but we should not forget that every action has an opposite reaction. Some of the common students are behaving irrationally. But at the same time what the JCD is doing now on the DU campus is simply not acceptable. It is high time for the ruling party to hold the reins of its student wing. Above all, we should keep this in mind that by abandoning the examinations and classes we are deliberately destroying our own future. It cannot be a positive way to express our dissent. We have to be more rational and conscious so that no political group or organisation can exploit our emotions and fellow feeling for their own political interest.
