Aftab removed, Wakil made NU vice chancellor

The government yesterday appointed Dr Wakil Ahmed as the new vice chancellor of National University (NU), removing Dr Aftab Ahmad.Prof Wakil Ahmed, president of Bangla Academy and professor of Bangla Department at Dhaka University, has been appointed for a four-year term. The government decided to remove Dr Aftab following press reports against him about irregularities at the NU in appointing officials and staffs. Besides, the government was also annoyed with him as he received Tk 8 lakh from Bangla Academy in the name of writing a book on late president Ziaur Rahman. But he neither submitted the book to Bangla Academy nor returned the money. The decision to remove Dr Aftab has been implemented after the prime minister gave the nod. Dr Aftab, a professor of Political Science at DU, was made the VC in 2003 for four-year term.
