Probe body for action against 18 Rab men

The probe body constituted to investigate the July 15 incident in which some members of the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) led by an ASP brutally tortured a business executive in Uttara submitted its report on Wednesday night to the Rab Director General (DG). According to sources, the probe body held 18 Rab personnel responsible for the incident and recommended punitive action against them. On the other hand, the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and police were investigating the incident separately. Some Rab members led by ASP Ashraful Islam, forcibly took Abu Bakar Sultan, executive director of Harness Level Industries Ltd, to Rab-1 office in Uttara and tortured him following an altercation between Ashraful and Sultan. Soon after the incident, the Rab filed a general diary (GD) with the Uttara police, alleging that Abu Bakar Sultan was assaulted by a mob and Rab saved him from the people's wrath. After the incident, the Rab chief formed a four-member probe committee headed by Director (finance and administration) Mokhlesur Rahman. The other members of the committee were Deputy Director (intelligence) Zafrul Haq, Senior Assistant Director Ainul Bari and Deputy Assistant Director Mohsin Kabir. The committee was asked to submit its report within three days. Talking to the news agency, Director General of Rab Abdul Aziz Sarkar said the committee submitted its report Wednesday night. It recommended punitive action against some personnel. He said, "We are examining the report and will take action accordingly.
