Ctg jolted by tremor, aftershock

A mild tremor followed by an after-shock jolted the Chittagong city and its adjoining areas yesterday, sparking panic among city-dwellers for a while.

The first quake, measuring 4.8 on the Richter Scale, struck at 5:41pm and lasted for 16 seconds.

The epicentre of the tremor was 146km away from the Chittagong Seismic Observatory at the Ambagan area, sources said.

An aftershock then ensued after an hour, rocking the city for about 14 seconds. Scientists at the observatory said the epicentre of the aftershock was 124km away and the magnitude was 3.9 on the Richtar Scale.

Fifteen such tremors occurred in Chittagong this year.
