Reform proposals to create anarchy
BNP leaders say at discussion

The reform proposals on caretaker government placed by the 14 opposition parties are a part of a conspiracy to create anarchy and destroy the democratic process in the country, said senior leaders of the ruling BNP and Islamic parties at a discussion yesterday.Terming the proposals 'unconstitutional, irrelevant, imaginary and impractical', they said this agenda will create constitutional crises. The Swadhinata Forum Kendriyo Sangsad organised the discussion on 'Caretaker government reform proposals: Constitutional reality' at the National Press Club. The 14-party placed the proposals in a bid to create anarchy and an issue of agitation to divert the public attention from various development efforts of the government and foil the next general election, said Law Minister Moudud Ahmed as the chief guest."Why didn't Awami League reform the caretaker government system when it was in the government," he asked. They (AL) had appreciated the caretaker government system when they came to power through election under the system, but now they are hatching conspiracy fearing that they might not win the next election as the four-party alliance brought about significant development in various sectors, the minister said. He also said the opposition should join the parliament for a dialogue if they really want a positive change for the welfare of the people. He called on the four-party leaders and activists to be united to resist the conspiracy of the 14-party. Communications Minister Nazmul Huda said the AL tried to create issues at different times to oust the government but failed. He said the weakest part of the proposals is that 'the caretaker government chief should be appointed on the basis of consensus of all political parties'. But they did not keep the provision of what to do if all the parties fail to reach a consensus, he added. "Still we are ready to discuss the reform proposals, but they (14-party) must come to parliament. Participation of the leaders, other than Awami League lawmakers, can be ensured through making application to the Speaker," the minister said. Besides, the Speaker can form a special committee to discuss the proposals and all the leaders can send their opinions to the committee, he added. There cannot be any discussion outside the parliament, he said. BNP Joint Secretary General Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, BNP MP Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Mohammad Kamaruzzaman, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish leader Ahmad Abdul Kader, Islami Shashantantra Andolon leader Syed Mosaddek Billah Al Madani also spoke.
