"When it comes to acting, I've been blessed"-- Mahfuz

It's not a cakewalk for an actor to attain popularity as a hero after portraying a villainous character. One exception is Mahfuz Ahmed who gave a sterling performance in the immensely popular TV serial Kothao Keu Nei, where he plays a witness against protagonist Baker Bhai that resulted in his death sentence.

The controversial and much talked-about serial created ripples among the TV audience in the early '90s. The small but important role made Mahfuz a prominent face among the newcomers of the time. According to Mahfuz, "After portraying this specific character, I didn't have to look back."

Mahfuz Ahmed is perhaps the busiest actor on television at present. He has been cast in well-known TV plays, drama serials and feature films including Ekannoborti, Joyjatra, Srabon Megher Din, Devdas, Four Wives Club, Ongkar and yet to be aired Dui Bon.

Mahfuz made his debut as a protagonist in the TV play Shesh Porjonto Tomakey Chai (1997). He portrayed the role of an armed cadre and was paired with Bipasha Hayat in the play.

According to Mahfuz, "When I stepped in the entertainment world, among the dominant players were actors such as Azizul Hakim, Zahid Hassan and Tauquir Ahmed. So, it was not very easy to become the 'one' among these talented actors. However, the audience appreciated my performances and that explains how I have managed to be where I am today."

The character in Nurul Huda Ekoda Bhalobeshechhilo is one of Mahfuz's favourite roles. Although it didn't make waves like Ekannoborti, the role was satisfying for him. A self-effacing Mahfuz says, "Some actors are more fortunate rather than considerably talented. When it comes to acting, I've been blessed." Versatile Mahfuz has played characters from classic novels, as well as contemporary characters.

Mahfuz has a fascination for acting in films, both mainstream and alternative. He has received accolades for his performances in films including Humayun Ahmed's Dui Duari and Srabon Megher Din, Tauquir Ahmed's Joyjatra and Shahidul Haque Khokon's Lal Shobuj.

Mahfuz is also a familiar face in TV commercials. The commercial of a soft drink, in which he paired up with Mona Lisa, won plaudits.

Mahfuz is keen to portray revolutionary characters that remain etched in the mind of the audience. However, this is a tricky proposition. In his words, "There is little chance for that because the media, sponsors and the makers have their limitations. As an artiste, I have scant room to break the prevailing, unwritten rules."

Speaking on the TV scenario, he adds, "Ekushey Television (ETV) created a very strong platform for young performers. The young generation appreciates innovative ideas. Apart from promising actors, ETV promoted many new directors, scriptwriters and talented crew." Mahfuz regrets that such promotion is rarely seen in the current TV channels.
