5 traders fined for selling unregistered baby foods

Two mobile courts yesterday fined Tk 1.22 lakh to four sweetmeat shops, two restaurants, five milk powder traders and a substandard bakery items producer.

The mobile courts yesterday collected fines from five milk powder traders in Moulovi Bazar, Tk 10,000 each, as they sell unregistered baby foods. The mobile court raided National Traders, Borhan Traders, Islam Brothers, Ajmir Traders and Abdul Rashid and Sons, and found the owners of those shops were selling unregistered baby food and warned them and fined them.

Later the court went to the factory of Original Bombay Sweets in Devi Das road in Lalbagh. The court filed a case against TM Saiful Alam, the owner of 'Original Bombay Sweets,' under the Special Power Act-1974, as he produces Chanachur and other bakery items with adulterated and rotten ingredients.

"When we nabbed the workers from their shops, the owner came to know and fled away, locking the factory. We found the environment was very bad and filthy in that factory," said Rokanuddoullah, the magistrate of the court.

The court fined the owner Tk 20,000 as he does not have the BSTI certificate, and a worker, Md. Mintu, Tk 10,000.

The court also filed a case under the Special Power Act-1974, which is under investigation of the Lalbagh police station, sources present at the mobile court told The Daily Star.

The second mobile court raided four sweetmeat shops and two restaurants in the Khilkhet Bazar. The owners of the small sweetmeat shops, including Tangail Sweetmeat, Tangail Porabari, Bikrampur Mistanno Vandar and Original Tangail Sweetmeats were fined Tk 38,000 for producing food items in unhygienic conditions.

The court also fined two small restaurants from the same area as those were very dirty, the court sources said.

The other team of the Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) did not conduct any drive yesterday due to a lack of police forces, sources from DCC said.
