The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (Cab) authorities and experts again claimed yesterday that eight out of 12 brands of juice available in the market are substandard and challenged the companies concerned to test their juices through a neutral international agency. At a press conference, Cab authorities said if the juice companies want to contradict with the results released on July 26, they can bring their experts and explain their position. "We will be happy if their fruit juices are really made of fruits and without any unsafe chemicals," Dr Quazi Farooque, secretary general of Cab, said, adding "Those packed juices are really not safe and there is no presence of natural fruit juice in them." On July 26, Cab released a report saying there was no real fruit juice in 97 percent of juice packs available in the market, and that chemical and artificial colours were found in laboratory test done by the Dhaka City Corporation and ICDDR,B. The report also said the different artificial colours in these juices may cause diseases like cancer, dysentery, gastric and affect the kidney and liver. At the press conference at the Cab auditorium, the Cab authorities again upheld its test report that found 48 parts per millions (PPM) of sulphur dioxide in one orange juice, whereas the safe limit of sulphur dioxide is only 10PPM. The Cab officials said the governments in developed countries have banned using of sulphur dioxide in food items and medicines as tests have proved that sulphur dioxide increases severe allergenic syndrome which can even lead to death. A popular mango juice was found substandard, as the quantity of total sugar was found less than required, speakers said at the press conference. "Natural fruit juices must contain some minerals and different kinds of vitamins. But we found only vitamin C in the packed fruit juice and no minerals, which proves there is no natural fruit juice in these packed juices," said Quazi Farooque. Prof Bidyut Kanti Das, teacher of the pharmacy department, Prof Harun Yusuf, teacher of biochemistry department, and ABM Faruk, chairman of pharmacy department of Dhaka University, and Khalilur Rahman Sajal, cashier of the Cab, were present at the press conference.
