Ogo Shono Ke Bajae
A tribute to Tagore

Draped in a red-and-yellow handloom saree, wearing ethnic dokra ornaments and a batik print scarf on her shoulder, celebrated actress Subarna Mustafa looked graceful. She was sitting on a small stage decorated with batik cloth and plants. This was the set for a special television programme titled Ogo Shono Ke Bajae on the occasion of the death anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.

The whole unit was preparing for the final shot: director Kaushik Sankar Das explained the shot to the cameraman, the sound engineer prepared for the best sound effect, while TV monitors were all set at the back stage.

Subarna hardly had time to breathe. She was busy reciting Rabindranath Tagore's poem, Ogo banshiwala bajao tomar banshi.

The TV show, a compilation of dance, music and poetry recital, has basically been scripted with the songs and poems of Tagore and has the flute as a common feature. Apart from Subarna, the other two performers are eminent Rabindra Sangeet singer Mita Haq and popular danseuse Sharmila Bandyopadhyay.

Renowned dancer Lubna Mariam penned the script based on the theme, which is a brainchild of Sharmila Bandyopadhyay. Sharmila was keen to diversify from the popular format of dance dramas of Tagore. She says, "Tagore brought all the human emotions in his literary works: joy, pain, devotion and dejection. I planned to portray the emotions that he expressed in his poems and songs in a new light; by blending dance, music and recitation."

Mita Haque, who is popular for her soulful singing, said, "I am going to perform five songs, all underpinned by the flute. This is the first time I am doing any such show for the TV. The songs are Ogo shono ke bajae, Jagotey anandojoggey, Amar angey angey ke bajay banshi and Morilo mori belonging to different categories of Tagore songs."

The debutante director, Kaushik Sankar Das said, "The script for the TV programme is unique as the sequences have been arranged in a different way from the stage show. The emphasis was to create an effect which is not so common in filming a stage show for TV with different kind of shot divisions and camera work."

Samia Zaman is the executive producer of the programme.

The programme will be aired on ntv on August 6 at 9:40pm.
