Bomb blasts halt courts' proceedings

All the proceedings of the Dhaka courts were suspended yesterday after a series of bomb blasts rocked the courts' premises and other places in the city.

Judges and magistrates at the courts of district and sessions judge, metropolitan sessions judge, district magistrate and chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) felt insecure to proceed with their activities. They demanded tight security on the court premises.

Four bombs exploded in the corridors of the District and Se-ssions Judge's Court, Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court and the CMM courts. Soon after the blast, the judges and magistrates left their seats adjourning the proceedings.

One bomb was recovered unexploded.

Dhaka District Judge Mohammad Rafiqul Islam told The Daily Star that the blasts were designed to create panic. He suggested setting up closed circuit cameras in the area.

Metropolitan Sessions Judge (in-charge) Shamsul Alam Khan said tight security should be maintained on the court premises. Courts should be free from terrorism, he added.

CMM Jalal Ahmed said he has sent a letter to the home ministry for ensuring security in the court area.
