Bangladeshi artist honoured in Japan

Khalid Mahamud Mithu recently won an "Excellent" prize at the International Art Mirai Art Expo, arranged by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Tokyo. On display were about 3000 paintings from many countries, including Bangladesh. It was only recently that Mithu learnt about his prize.

Mithu was elated at receiving this prestigious prize. "The Japanese people awarding the prize received me with cries of 'Bangladesh, Bangladesh, Mithu Chang, Mithu Chang' and this pleased me no end," reminisced Mithu.

The prize-winning Hope of lifepresented the idea that the people of Bangladesh live on hopes and aspirations, as they struggle for peace and security. "My painting presents the symbolic idea that we aspire to live in peace and harmony. There are many horizontal bars of bluish gray. On the horizon is a half moon which has a lot of rough textures mixed in orange, white and blue which speak of our struggle, " said Mithu.

The jury was surprised to find the technically progressive creation from Bangladesh, which was a departure from the oriental flavour.
