Two Dists in Khulna
Massive hunt for blasts coordinator

Law enforcers have started a massive hunt to nab a man, who coordinated the bomb attacks in two districts of Khulna division, an investigator said.

Soon after four arrestees mentioned his name during interrogation at the JIC (Joint Interrogation Cell), members of law enforcement and intelligence agencies started operation to trap him.

Another source however told The Daily Star at 9:20pm yesterday possibly the coordinator has already been nabbed and is on way to Dhaka.

He would be presented before the four arrestees to verify him and his role in the August 17 blasts.

The source said two arrestees from Satkhira and two others from Kushtia admitted at the JIC the man was in charge of coordination and supplying bombs.

"It will be a significant progress in investigation if the arrestees can identify the coordinator," the investigator said, asking not to be identified.

Sources close to the JIC said investigators quizzed 25 people at the cell as five more were brought yesterday from different districts.

Law enforcers continue to nab leaders and activists of the Awami League and its front organisations across the country in connection with the serial blasts.

GAIBANDHA
Police have identified six activists of banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) out of 14 suspects arrested in connection with the blasts in the district.

A court remanded the 14 arrestees for five days. Police sent their confessional statements to the higher authorities, seeking direction for the next course of action, sources said.

But police could not trace the most wanted JMB regional commander, Matin Mehdi, who had held regular meetings and training programmes in remote shoal areas and went into hiding on August 17.

TANGAIL
Police on Sunday sent madrasa teacher Mahbubul Alam and student Anwarul Islam to the JIC for questioning.

They were hauled before a court, which remanded them for five days.

LALMONIRHAT
Law enforcement agencies including Detective Branch (DB) and Special Branch (SB) of police have come under sharp criticism as they failed to arrest JMB activists.

Locals alleged JMB and Ahle Hadith operatives are still active in the district and may attack villagers any time.

The DB and SB men are busy taking bribes at the smuggling points rather than nabbing the culprits, sources said.

Locals identified a madrasa at Palashi village in Aditmari upazila where the JMB and Ahle Hadith members met on the night of August 16.

Residents of Genti village in Patgram upazila held six suspected people at midnight and turned them in to police.

SATKHIRA
A police team led by ASP Delwar Hossain Sayeedi arrested JMB cadre Uzzal, 30, in Itagachha in the town on Sunday night.

Police yesterday again nabbed Anisur Rahman Khokon, 40, who was arrested soon after the bombings, but released on Thursday.

Sources said the two admitted their role behind the blasts and disclosed names of their associates.

PABNA
BDNEWS reports: Police arrested three Jubo League leaders in connection with the blasts.

The police said they arrested district Jubo League VP Sarder Mithu Ahmed, 34, Karimuzzaman Anju, 32, and Mehedi Hasan April, 27, yesterday.

BARISAL
Barisal police have placed Sheikh Kabir, a Jubo League leader, and Md Azim, former Jatiya Party activist, on two days' remand.

Barisal Kotwali police claimed the arrestees are bomb makers and have previous records in such criminal activities.

Kotwali police also arrested two more persons but denied giving details, saying they were sent to jail under section 54 after primary interrogation.
