Dr Kamal demands resignation of minister
Staff Correspondent
Jatiya Oikya Mancha President Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday demanded resignation of one of the two cabinet ministers who made contradictory remarks on the August 17 countrywide serial bomb blasts."In the parliamentary system of democracy two cabinet ministers can not give contradictory statements. So the prime minister should investigate who is right and who is wrong. The minister who is wrong should resign within 24 hours," Dr Kamal told at a joint press conference with Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) at the National Press Club. If the prime minister fails to take action against the minister responsible for making false remark she will be responsible for destroying the parliamentary system of democracy, the eminent lawyer said. Industries Minister and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami recently blamed Israeli and Indian intelligence agencies Mosad and RAW for the bombings while Foreign Minister M Morshed Khan on Sunday said the remarks reflect the view of Matiur Rahman Nizami and his party only. Dr Kamal and BDB President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, who also addressed the press conference, urged the government to arrange a national dialogue on the issue of bomb blasts and summon an emergency session in parliament. "The incident not only proved how vulnerable the country's security network is, but also demonstrated the government's weakness and failure to contain the growing activities of such extremist elements," a joint statement of the two leaders read. They said the entire country must unite today, rise above narrow partisanship and engage in serious and in-depth discussions on the issue to take an urgent action to protect national security and the lives and properties of people. They also urged BNP Secretary General Mannan Bhuiyan to call Awami League General Secretary Abdul Jalil for discussion and requested Jalil to respond to such a call. Expressing dismay at the probe results of such incidents in the past, the statement said the track record of the government does not inspire countrymen's confidence in its capacity, competence and intention to dig out the facts. "If similar investigation is carried out, people will be frustrated," B Chowdhury said. He demanded a qualitative change in the investigation to bring the perpetrators to book. While four days have passed without any significant action, the government should immediately publish a full report informing the nation of the action that has been taken and planned to be taken. We need to see whether a government can stay in power after losing public confidence, Dr Kamal said, adding, "Have they confidence in themselves?" On the government call for discussion among the political parties, Dr Kamal said, " I want a five-minute coverage on Bangladesh Television to inform the nation of my opinion." BDB will observe a dawn-to-dusk hunger strike in front of its central office on Thursday and offer prayers at mosques, temples, churches and other religious sites on Friday.
