Desa employee gunned down

Criminals gunned down a Dhaka Electricity Supply Authorities (Desa) employee and wounded another in front of the Desa office at Lalbagh yesterday.

Abdul Khalek, 55, a driver of Desa, was handing over the keys to his vehicle to the on-duty driver Touhidur Rahman Munna in front their office at Noor Fattah Lane when an unknown youth shot them both at around 3:30pm.

"I was taking the keys when the youth, aged around 30, wearing a shirt and trousers, aimed a pistol at Khalek," said injured Touhid.

"The youth shot Khalek in the head from close range and seeing me he shot me in the stomach and the left thigh," Touhid added.

They were rushed to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared Khalek dead at 4:15pm and admitted Touhid.

A nearby shopkeeper Nasir Hossain claimed to have seen two armed youths running away from the spot after the incident.

Touhid, police and office employees at Lalbagh could not give any reasons behind Khalek's killing.

"He was supposed to retire in two years time and being a driver, he had no opportunity to get involved in any sort of graft," Osman Gani, executive engineer of Lalbagh Desa, told The Daily Star.

"Khalek might have enmity in his residential area at Postogola Bidyut Quarters which could have led to his killing," he added.

"The killers were sure of his identity and it was a case of shoot to kill, he must have had some sort of enmity with them," Assistant Deputy Commissioner (South Zone) Shahriar Rahman told The Daily Star.
