Cop held for extortion

A police constable was arrested yesterday as he was caught for his attempt to extort money from a businessman at Bangabandhu National Stadium.Constable Mohammad Shajahan of Rajarbagh Police Lines demanded Tk 5,000 from Shahinur Ripon, owner of Victor Electronics, at the east gate of the stadium at 11:30am. "I got off from a rickshaw in front of the Pubali Bank at the east gate of stadium around 11:00am when a man approached me introducing himself as an informer of Special Branch (SB)," said Ripon. The man took Ripon to the constable who claimed himself to be an SB personnel. He then accused Ripon of running an unscrupulous business and demanded Tk 5,000 from him. Pedestrians and locals came to his rescue as Ripon grabbed the constable and shouted for help. Police produced Shajahan before court. Magistrate Shafiq Anwar sent him to jail. He filed a case with Paltan police under Speedy Trial (Law and Order Disruption) Act. Snatching and extortion by members of law enforcement agencies have become a frequent incident recently. Four policemen were arrested for stealing 13.5kg of silver and Tk 28,000 from an employee of a goldsmith shop in the capital on July 21. On June 29, Sergeant Zulfikar Ali robbed a businessman of Tk 14.47 lakh at Bijoynagar. He was thrice remanded and then sent to jail, but the loot is yet to be recovered. Three policemen were arrested on April 10 at Shyampur for extorting from the owner of an auto-rickshaw garage. Sub-inspector (SI) Hafizur Rahman of the Rapid Action Battalion was held on March 3 at Khilgaon for robbing a rice wholesaler. Two more robber cops, along with two of their informers, were arrested at Shyampur in the capital on August 2 after robbing Tk 3.3 lakh from a rice-seller at Srinagar in Munshiganj.
