Govt gives nod to pipeline to link Bibiyana with national grid

The US company Unocal has got the government approval to set up a 46-kilometre pipeline to link its Bibiyana gas field with the national grid line, officials said.

The prime minister has approved a proposal to acquire 50 acres of land in Moulvibazar and Habiganj in this regard last week.

The proposal faced obstacles at different stages, causing delay in the process for a few months. The company also faced resistance from locals over price fixation of the acquired land.

However, the disputes were resolved after higher prices for private land were assured. The district administration of Habiganj will acquire the land.

The construction of the pipeline is likely to complete by 2006, a Unocal official said. The company expects to supply gas from Bibiyana to the national grid -- North-South Pipeline -- by the end of next year or beginning of 2007, he added.

Unocal will drill at least five new wells at the North pad of Bibiyana located in Nabiganj upazila in Habiganj.

Under the $230m giant work programme, Unocal has started land development work to establish a 500MMCFD capacity gas processing plant at its South pad, where 50 acres of land have been acquired. They will drill six new gas wells there.
