Eden girl's body recovered from college pond

The body of a female student of Eden College was recovered from a pond inside the college in the early hours yesterday.

She was identified as Kaniz Fatema Fancy, a second year student of accounting and resident of room no 117 of Khadiza Mahila Hostel.

Fellow students said they informed Lalbag Police at around midnight after Fancy was missed from 10:00pm. They saw her seated near the pond at about 9:30pm.

Police came to the college and called the divers of the fire brigade after finding a pair of sleepers on the bank of the pond.

The divers recovered the body from the pond and took it to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital where the doctors on duty declared her dead.

Police suspected that she had committed suicide.

After the autopsy, the body was sent to her village home at Faridganj in Chandpur district.

Meanwhile, a student's bid to commit suicide by falling down from third floor of Arts Building of Dhaka University was foiled by a group of other students yesterday.

Following an argument with his girlfriend Ismat Jahan Nancy, a first year student of Public Administration, Shakhawat Hossain, a second year student of Accounting, went to third floor and hung his body from the railing.

As Nancy raised hue and cry, a group of students rushed to the spot and rescued him.

Shakhawat said he was having a bad time with her girlfriend that led him to commit suicide.

Shakhawat's parents took him back to residence, police said.
