Nazrul's death anniversary observed


The 29th anniversary of death of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, popularly known as "rebel poet", was observed in the country with due respect yesterday.

The day's programmes began with placing wreaths by the relatives of the poet at the mazar in the morning. They also offered prayers at the mazar.

Later, various socio-cultural organisations, political parties and student bodies placed wreath at the mazar.

Ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), main opposition Awami League, Dhaka University (DU) authorities, Dhaka University Teachers' Association (Duta), Workers Party, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh Chhatra League, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, Pragotishil Chhatra Jote, Bangladesh Chhatra Union, Samajtantrik Chhatra Front, Nazrul Academy, Nazrul Institute, Bangla Academy, Kabi Nazrul University, Shishu Academy, Bishwa Kabita Kantha Parishad, Shilpakala Academy, Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Zia Sahitya Sangskritik Sangstha, different DU halls and many other organisations and individuals placed wreaths at the grave of the poet.

AL presidium members Abdur Razzaq, Tofail Ahmed, Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, General Secretary Abdul Jalil and other leaders placed wreaths on behalf of the party.

Minister for Fisheries and Live Stock Abdullah Al Noman, State Minister for Labour and Employment Amanulla Aman placed wreaths on behalf of the ruling BNP.

On this day in 1976, Nazrul died in Dhaka after his prolonged illness. He was born at Churulia of Bardawan district in West Bengal India, on May 24, 1899.

For his patriotic poems and songs, Nazrul became a source of inspiration to the common people and the freedom fighters during movements against the then British era and later during the War of Liberation of Bangladesh.

The daylong programmes include placing wreaths at his mazar on the Dhaka University campus, milad mahfil and discussion meetings on his life and works.

Nazrul Academy arranged a discussion and cultural programme at Nazrul Bhaban in the city in the afternoon. Academy president Dr Ashraf Siddiqui presided over the function while noted writers, researchers and poets took part in the discussion and artistes rendered Nazrul songs.
