Preserve JS complex as per '73 master plan
Architect Mubasshar appeals to PM

Institute of Architects Bangladesh President Mubasshar Hussain has appealed to the prime minister to take steps to preserve the parliament complex as per the 1973 master plan designed by world famous architect Louis I Kahn.

Mubasshar, also vice president of the Commonwealth Association of Architects, in a written appeal said the famous parliament complex has been recognised as an icon of the world. It is also considered throughout the world as one of the greatest architectural works of modern times, he added.

"To build anything in violation of the 1973 master plan under the pretext that it is incomplete would be like using a brush on top of Zainal Abedin's paintings or to add jewelry to Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, for the sake of their beautification," he said.

The High Court has recognised the parliament complex as one of the best architectural works of the modern times. It is unacceptable that new structures should be built there.

"We are appealing to the prime minister to direct the relevant authorities to refrain from appealing against the High Court verdict, which earlier declared the construction of two houses of Speakers illegal," he said.
