'Unite to resist fanatics'

Speakers at a roundtable yesterday called on the civil society, rights and cultural organisations and political parties to unitedly resist the activities of fanatics across the country.The August 17 serial bomb attacks has proved that the religious extremists have become united to eliminate the progressive force of the country, they said, adding that raising mass awareness and building international network are also vital to fight against fanaticism. The Sammilita Samajik Andolon organised the roundtable titled 'Rise of fundamentalist terrorism, present Bangladesh and responsibilities' at Shaheed Tajul Auditorium in the city. The speakers also demanded restoration of the original constitution in order to resist the religious extremists. Writer Shahriar Kabir called on the government to keep a close watch on madrasas and incorporate the fundamentalism issue into the agenda of upcoming Saarc summit. Workers Party leader Rashed Khan Menon, Communist Party leader Muzahidul Islam Selim, Mostofa Amin of Forward Party, Advocate Tobarak Hossain, Khushi Kabir of Nijera Kori, Dr Hamida Hossain, Dr Anwar Hossain, and Chowdhury Khurshid Alam took part in the discussion chaired by Prof Ajoy Roy.
