Faridpur-1 by-polls today


By-election in the Fardipur-1 constituency will be held today amid boycott by the opposition parties.

Ruling BNP candidate Shah Mohammad Abu Zafar and independent candidate Mufti Sharafat Hossain backed by Shaikhul Hadith Azizul Haque-led faction of Islami Oikya Jote (IOJ), a component of the ruling alliance, were busy in the last moment vote campaign yesterday.

Authorities deployed Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) and army personnel along with other regular law enforcers while 150 magistrates and over forty mobile and summary courts will be on duty to ensure holding the polls peacefully.

The local administration identified 73 of the 146 polling centres as vulnerable regarding law and order. The voting will start at 8:00am and continue till 4:00pm without any break.

A public holiday has been announced in the constituency to enable the voters to exercise franchise.

As many as 1,994 officers including 146 presiding officers, 616 assistant presiding officers, and 1,232 polling officers have been given the responsibility to conduct the polls in the constituency with 3,22,298 voters, the Election Commission sources said.

The Faridpur-1 constituency comprising Madhukhali, Boalmari and Alfadanga upazilas fell vacant after Kazi Sirajul Islam, who was elected member of parliament on Awami League ticket, joined BNP on June 4 by crossing the floor.

Besides Abu Zafar and Sharafat Hossain, another candidate in the run is Krishok Mohammad Sadek, who stands for his 43rd election, with a record of security deposit forfeiture in previous elections.
