Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) yesterday began a drive to demolish the risky high-rise buildings near the runway of Zia International Airport as the buildings may disrupt flying of aircraft. The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) identified some 111 buildings near the airport as risky in 2001. The buildings will be destroyed in three phases. Md Helaluddin, a magistrate of Rajuk, said they will demolish 17 buildings in the first phase. Ali Reza Khan, director of CAAB, said Rajuk and the civil aviation authority jointly conducted a survey to identify such buildings. The survey found 66 out of the 111 buildings "most vulnerable."
