Meenabazar fined for selling foods without expiry date

As the mobile court arrived, the authorities of the Meenabazar, a department store at Dhanmondi in the capital, sprayed air freshener and ignited incense sticks in their fish and meat section with the hope to prevent the stink emanating from the rotten items.

The court also found dextrose monohydrate (glucose) without expiry date on it and bread, biscuits and other bakery items without the seal of the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI).

The mobile court led by Magis-trate Rokan Ud Doulah yesterday fined them Tk 50,000 for selling those.

The members of the court also found date-expired and sub-standard soybean oil, juice, chocolate, and juice powder kept on the basement of the shop.

The shop authorities, however, said they kept those below standard items on the basement to return them to the suppliers concerned.

The magistrate realised the fine and destroyed the sub-standard stuff recovered.

The same mobile court raided Agora, another popular departmental store in the city couple of days ago and found selling rotten stinky fish.

Another mobile court led by ABM Abdul Fattah sent Moyazzem Hossain, the manager of Sisili Thai and Chinese restaurant for two months imprisonment as he failed to pay a fine of Tk 20,000.

The same court realised Tk 89,000 from six bakeries and small restaurants in Badda area.

The court also shut off Quintuple Beverage Industries that produces "Paani" brand bottled water as the period of their BSTI registration has expired.

A mobile court led by Mizanur Rahman raided different restaurants in Ramna area, filed eight cases and realised Tk 72,000 as fine.

Another mobile court under Magistrate Mujibul Haq collected Tk 50,000 from five restaurant owners in Sutrapur area.

None of the convicted restaurant owners were found to maintain hygiene standards.
