HC directive not to arrest 'Hathat' editor

The High Court yesterday directed the government and law enforcement agencies not to arrest or take in custody AK Showkat Ali alias Showkat Bangali, editor of a Chittagong based magazine 'Hathat,' without an appropriate order of a competent court.

Vacation bench of the High Court also issued a rule on the government and law enforcement agencies to show cause as to why the respondents shall not be directed to ensure that the petitioner (Showkat) and his family will not be harassed, tortured and that his right to life and liberty will not be interfered in an unlawful manner.

The High Court issued the rule following a writ petition filed by Showkat against arbitrary, illegal and undue harassment by the various intelligence agencies of the government.

Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam moved for the petitioner.

The petitioner told The Daily Star last night that he has been subjected to the harassment after he published his magazine 'Hathat' in July.
