BCU launches countrywide protests today

The Bangladesh Chhatra Union (BCU) will launch a series of countrywide demonstrations today in protest against the price hike of paper, proposed single track education system at high school level and the attack on BCU leader at Jahangirnagar University (JU).

BCU leaders announced their 12-day programmes at a press conference yesterday and criticised the policy of BNP-led four-party alliance government on education.

They said over 3.22 crore students in the country will be the worst sufferers due to the price hike of paper.

The leaders also demanded punishment to the cadres of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) involved in the attack on BCU leader Rakibul Alam Rusho at Jahangirnagar University on September 1.

The JCD cadres along with the Islami Chhatra Shibir cadres attacked Rusho and four other students with lethal weapons, leaving them critically injured, but the university authorities still remains indifferent, said Shamsul Alam Sajjan, general secretary of BCU.

He also demanded steps to ensure proper treatment for Rusho, now undergoing treatment at the Health and Hope Clinic in the city.

BCU leaders Joli Talukdar, Selina Sultana Sumi, Khan Asaduzzaman Masum and Manabendra were also present at the press conference.
